Readers may remember how last year I wrote a step-by-step tutorial on how to file your taxes with TurboTax.

The version of TurboTax I used was TurboTax Self Employed, which I still recommend for freelancers, entrepreneurs, solopreneurs etc. You can access TurboTax Self Employed here.

But if you feel your taxes are….uhm…. a bit more complicated (more complicated than a freelancer’s taxes, you say?)…. keep reading. TurboTax has now unveiled a new product designed to provide live assistance from a credentialed tax expert, on demand. It’s called TurboTax Live and below is an overview of its power and key benefits.

TurboTax Live Review – Tax Filing Simplified

In the last year, I’ve had a lot going on. In addition to maintaining my freelance writing business, I’ve also earned money from this website, went back to work full-time, moved in with my boyfriend, and opened a new retirement account with my employer. I’m also still renting out my first home and collecting “rental income” from that. I was able to note these changes in the TurboTax portal.

Complicated, right? Having multiple streams of income is a huge blessing, but come tax time it quickly spirals into the biggest headache of my year.

Despite the large amount of changes in my life this year, after inputting some personal information, my filing status still hasn’t changed from “single.” The questions, as-always, were simple and straightforward.

Since I filed with TurboTax last year, you can see they had some of the income sources I claimed last year on file, but I wasn’t sure how to also add in my new “full time job” income (which comes on a W-2). Thankfully, there is a button for that and TurboTax was able to import my W-2 information.

I was able to figure out my W-2 situation, but I had loads of other questions (what if I forget a W-2, what if I underestimated my self-employment expenses? Do my business deductions still matter after I went back to work?

Here’s where the TurboTax Live difference really starts to shine. In the upper right corner is the “Expert Help” button. Click on this and you get the usual TurboTax FAQ section, but also the ability to connect with an expert via one-way video technology. (Obviously, this is during business hours. Tax experts need to sleep too!) But, you can ask for help and/or video chat as many times as you need.

TurboTax experts are incredibly qualified- they either have to be Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Enrolled Agents (EA), or Practicing Attorneys with an average of 10 years of tax preparation experience. So, you’re not getting a telephone agent or someone just out of school.

Expert Review Services are a Sanity Saver

If you’re the “learn as you go” type (I am) you can go through the software and then sign up for “Expert Review” at the end. What this means is that once you’re done preparing your taxes, you can have a tax expert review your taxes for accuracy, sign and file. (Normally, this is what an accountant would do for you to “certify” it’s been officially prepared.)

Having an expert review generates peace of mind for you, and it comes with the TurboTax Maximum Refund Guarantee plus a 100% Accuracy Guarantee if you use Expert Review.

I’ve been filing taxes for nearly ten years now, and I can honestly say it’s never been easier or more seamless. As a bonus, products like this are perfect for the self-employed and side hustlers, whose income isn’t as “cut-and-dry” as receiving one W-2 from one employer. Even those with big life changes (think marriage, or kids) would likely find comfort in having access to immediate answers and the TurboTax 100% Accuracy and Maximum Refund Guarantees.
