You’ve heard that you can make hundreds of dollars a month completing surveys, but in reality, you found it takes a ton of hours to even reach the $100.00 mark. So, you tried something new – paid focus groups. You complete a few screeners a week and you score a focus group study every couple of months, but this isn’t what you had in mind. What if I told you there’s a way to make $500 a month or more with focus groups by changing only a few things in your routine?
LB Note: I've never made any money doing paid focus groups, so I'm excited to publish this guest post by Tracy over at Earn It Save It. She gives away all her good, ACTIONABLE, advice on making money with focus groups, how to find focus groups, and get the ones that pay the best money below. If you're looking for a way to earn more money or for a new “side hustle”, be sure to read the full post!
First, let's look at the 5 reasons you’re not hitting the elusive $500 a month figure (and what you can do to turn things around.)
#1 – You’re completing the wrong paid online surveys.
If you’re spending time completing 10 surveys a day and only making a few dollars, then something’s wrong. Unless the market research company has stated that the survey is a screener for a focus group – pass.
To make $500 a month with focus groups, you must complete focus group screeners, not regular surveys.
Unfortunately, screeners are unpaid. Screeners are short surveys that determine if you’re eligible for the actual focus group study.
ACTION STEP: Pass on any survey that is not an actual focus group survey screener if you want to make more money. If you’ve run out of screeners to complete, see #2.
#2 – You don’t know where all the good market research companies are hiding.
Here’s the good news….
While Pinecone and Survey Junkie are fantastic survey companies, they are not the ones that will bring you the big money. These two companies make the top of our list because they are where you should spend your time when you’re not actively completing focus group screeners.
Here’s the “meh” news…
We still like them because they pay consistently and make good use of your time when compared to other survey companies. But, you have to complete a lot of those surveys to make $500. Let alone $500 in one month. You can make better use of your time and make more money by nailing down a consistent source of paid research studies and completing plenty of screeners.
ACTION STEP: Join Facebook groups that share new studies or better yet follow market research companies on Facebook. These companies often post new studies daily.
#3 – You complete an average of three market research screeners a week.
This is tough. Success with focus groups often depends on the number of screeners you can complete in a week. While you may luck out occasionally by completing a handful of screeners and booking a focus group that pays $250, don’t count on a repeat occurrence. The general recommendation is to complete as many screeners as you can.
Obviously, you will avoid screeners that have nothing to do with your demographic. For example, if the screener is looking for individuals who are outside of your age range, gender, or occupation then skip the screener. Otherwise, you’ll be wasting your time.
ACTION STEP: Set a base goal of completing 20 screeners a day. Don’t think you can complete that many in a day? Use a timer. Set aside 30 minutes a day for completing screeners. Consistent action will bring results.
#4 – You’re registered with too few research companies.
Based on our experience and discussions with other high earning focus group earners, you really need to register with at least 50 market research companies. Become a registered participant in their database to have screeners delivered to your email inbox.
Belonging to a handful of survey or market research company databases will not expose you to the number of screeners you need to complete on a weekly basis.
ACTION STEP: Today we entered “Market Research” in the search bar on Facebook and 45 companies came up. Be sure to follow each page and modify your Facebook notification settings so you don’t miss out on new studies. Also, be sure to visit their websites to complete participant registration. This will allow the companies to send focus group opportunities directly to your inbox.
#5 – You have an incomplete market research company participant profile.
When you register to become a participant for a market research company you complete a participant profile. The information that you provide will help the researchers decide, at least initially, if you’re a good fit for the study. An incomplete profile hurts you. The more information you can provide, the better chances you have of receiving a relevant screener.
ACTION STEP: If your family situation changes, whether it’s due to a change in relationship or additional children, it’s a good idea to update your participant profile. Keeping your profile current is a great way to make sure you don’t miss out on any screeners.
Implement at least two of the action steps we mentioned and report back to us next month. We’d love to hear about how these tips help increase your earnings. Please let us know about it in the comments section.
